Update: Hugh Kellenberger of The Herald-Times talked to Carlino about his decision to open up his recruitment. When Kellenberger asked if re-commiting to IU was an option, Carlino had this to say.
“For right now, it’s not (an option). I like IU a lot. But right now, coach Crean said — he told me that he doesn’t need any players there that aren’t 100 percent committed to the program and everything, and obviously he knew I was thinking that way. He told me that it was good for me to tell him now, instead of being there and having those kind of thoughts. He respected my decision.”

It’s been an eventful evening, to say the least, in the world of Indiana basketball.
First, The Washington Post reported Moses Abraham gave a verbal pledge to Georgetown on the day he returned from his official visit to Bloomington.
And now, in a confirmation of a story reported earlier by Mike Pegram, Matt Carlino has confirmed to Inside the Hall that he has decided to open up his recruitment.
“Coach Crean and his staff have been great to me,” Carlino wrote in a text message to Inside the Hall. “However, I feel that I committed too early and although I like Indiana, I felt it would be good to explore other options.”
Carlino, a 6-3 guard, played this past season at Bloomington South after transferring from Highland High, near Phoenix (AZ). He committed to Indiana shortly after attending an Elite Camp in August of 2008.
Indiana now has one player committed, Hamilton Heights wing Austin Etherington, in its 2011 recruiting class.

While Carlino said he still like IU and coach Tom Crean he's opted to look around before signing with anyone in November. He's expected to remain at Bloomington South.
The other tough news for IU fans came from a Washington Post story where Abraham said he committed to Georgetown over the Hoosiers. He spent time in Bloomington, Ind., this week on an official visit and will play in the Kentucky Derby Festival.

Matt Carlino at Assembly Hall:

A long trip for a few games for IU recruit Playing for a travel team takes on a new meaning for player from Phoenix By Terry Hutchens
The quick trip to Bloomington last weekend for the Adidas May Classic AAU tournament, however, probably won't make his list.
Carlino, who has committed to be part of IU's Class of 2011, left his home in Phoenix on Friday after school and, after a couple of weather-related travel delays, his plane landed in Indianapolis at 1:30 a.m. Saturday. By the time he got to his Bloomington hotel, it was 3:30 a.m.His Indiana Elite AAU team split a pair of games Saturday, and then it was bounced out of the single-elimination tournament Sunday. That last game started at 9:15 a.m. -- 6:15 Arizona time."I'm used to being up that early, just not playing basketball that early,'' said Carlino, who has a 40-minute daily ride to school. "But I'm not making excuses. I didn't shoot the ball well at all the last two days, and I just have to bring more game when I play with these guys again next weekend.''Carlino, a 6-2 point guard, did a lot of good things in his three games. He showed his quickness, his ballhandling and passing skill, as well as the ability to block shots. There were a couple of instances in which he went up toward the basket without a good option to either shoot or pass."We're still learning to play together as a team and I think when our chemistry improves throughout the summer, we'll look a lot more in sync,'' Carlino said. "With my game, I just need to make shots. I'm not used to having my shot not fall this much. And it's terrible. I just need to get tougher and get better all around.''Carlino, who gave an oral commitment to coach Tom Crean last August before his sophomore year, plans to play all summer for Indiana Elite. That means a lot of long trips. The team plays this weekend in North Carolina. The schedule will ease up on him because his school year ends this week."The schedule isn't that difficult because I really enjoy playing with these guys and with these coaches,'' Carlino said. "I knew there were going to be some travel issues when I decided to play with these guys, but it's a really good situation for me. I couldn't be happier.''
Carlino's teammates include Cody Zeller, the younger brother of Luke and Tyler Zeller of Washington, Ind., as well as highly touted recruit Marshall Plumlee and Bloomington South shooting guard Spencer Turner.Plumlee, a 6-10 power forward from Arden, N.C., being recruited by IU, said Carlino is the kind of teammate everyone wants.
"He's just so unselfish and he's very fun to play with,'' Plumlee said. "He's one of the people who just makes the game more enjoyable having him on the court. He's a great player.''Carlino has almost completely recovered from a concussion, broken nose and hip pointer, all suffered in an Arizona state championship game."Those weren't basketball injuries. That was more like a car wreck,'' said Indiana Elite coach Grant Gibson with a shake of his head."He's just now getting back into it. When he's at full go, he can be a completely different player. Right now we're really counting on Spencer (Turner) for all of our outside shooting, but when Matt starts hitting shots, that will make us a lot better team.''
