Matt Carlino UCLA ?

According To 5in60.com
Matt Carlino (6'3, 195 lb. shooting guard out of Bloomington South High School in Bloomington, IN.) is a member of the 2011 class and has decided to re-open his recruitment process. Carlino, was set to join the Indiana Hoosiers for the 2011-12 basketball season, but has since changed his mind and now the UCLA Bruins seem to be one of his favorites.

5in60.com will keep you posted on the situation concerning Matt Carlino as it develops.

Update: Hugh Kellenberger of The Herald-Times talked to Carlino about his decision to open up his recruitment. When Kellenberger asked if re-commiting to IU was an option, Carlino had this to say.

“For right now, it’s not (an option). I like IU a lot. But right now, coach Crean said — he told me that he doesn’t need any players there that aren’t 100 percent committed to the program and everything, and obviously he knew I was thinking that way. He told me that it was good for me to tell him now, instead of being there and having those kind of thoughts. He respected my decision.”

It’s been an eventful evening, to say the least, in the world of Indiana basketball.

First, The Washington Post reported Moses Abraham gave a verbal pledge to Georgetown on the day he returned from his official visit to Bloomington.

And now, in a confirmation of a story reported earlier by Mike Pegram, Matt Carlino has confirmed to Inside the Hall that he has decided to open up his recruitment.

“Coach Crean and his staff have been great to me,” Carlino wrote in a text message to Inside the Hall. “However, I feel that I committed too early and although I like Indiana, I felt it would be good to explore other options.”

Carlino, a 6-3 guard, played this past season at Bloomington South after transferring from Highland High, near Phoenix (AZ). He committed to Indiana shortly after attending an Elite Camp in August of 2008.

Indiana now has one player committed, Hamilton Heights wing Austin Etherington, in its 2011 recruiting class.

Indiana loses a pair

The Indiana University basketball program lost a pair of recruits on Thursday when Bloomington South's Matt Carlino re-opened his recruiting process and senior Progressive Christian Academy center Moses Abraham committed to Georgetown.

Carlino (left), a 6-foot-3 junior guard originally from Arizona, transferred to Bloomington South for his junior season after committing to IU in August of 2008. He averaged 13.3 points and 4.3 assists a game for South this past season.

While Carlino said he still like IU and coach Tom Crean he's opted to look around before signing with anyone in November. He's expected to remain at Bloomington South.

The other tough news for IU fans came from a Washington Post story where Abraham said he committed to Georgetown over the Hoosiers. He spent time in Bloomington, Ind., this week on an official visit and will play in the Kentucky Derby Festival.

Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey are the two members of the IU Class of 2010, while Austin Etherington is now the only player committed for '11. But Tom Crean and staff are in on a ton of top-level prospects from the junior class

A long trip for a few games for IU recruit Playing for a travel team takes on a new meaning for player from Phoenix By Terry Hutchens
The quick trip to Bloomington last weekend for the Adidas May Classic AAU tournament, however, probably won't make his list.
Carlino, who has committed to be part of IU's Class of 2011, left his home in Phoenix on Friday after school and, after a couple of weather-related travel delays, his plane landed in Indianapolis at 1:30 a.m. Saturday. By the time he got to his Bloomington hotel, it was 3:30 a.m.His Indiana Elite AAU team split a pair of games Saturday, and then it was bounced out of the single-elimination tournament Sunday. That last game started at 9:15 a.m. -- 6:15 Arizona time."I'm used to being up that early, just not playing basketball that early,'' said Carlino, who has a 40-minute daily ride to school. "But I'm not making excuses. I didn't shoot the ball well at all the last two days, and I just have to bring more game when I play with these guys again next weekend.''Carlino, a 6-2 point guard, did a lot of good things in his three games. He showed his quickness, his ballhandling and passing skill, as well as the ability to block shots. There were a couple of instances in which he went up toward the basket without a good option to either shoot or pass."We're still learning to play together as a team and I think when our chemistry improves throughout the summer, we'll look a lot more in sync,'' Carlino said. "With my game, I just need to make shots. I'm not used to having my shot not fall this much. And it's terrible. I just need to get tougher and get better all around.''Carlino, who gave an oral commitment to coach Tom Crean last August before his sophomore year, plans to play all summer for Indiana Elite. That means a lot of long trips. The team plays this weekend in North Carolina. The schedule will ease up on him because his school year ends this week."The schedule isn't that difficult because I really enjoy playing with these guys and with these coaches,'' Carlino said. "I knew there were going to be some travel issues when I decided to play with these guys, but it's a really good situation for me. I couldn't be happier.''
Carlino's teammates include Cody Zeller, the younger brother of Luke and Tyler Zeller of Washington, Ind., as well as highly touted recruit Marshall Plumlee and Bloomington South shooting guard Spencer Turner.Plumlee, a 6-10 power forward from Arden, N.C., being recruited by IU, said Carlino is the kind of teammate everyone wants.

"He's just so unselfish and he's very fun to play with,'' Plumlee said. "He's one of the people who just makes the game more enjoyable having him on the court. He's a great player.''Carlino has almost completely recovered from a concussion, broken nose and hip pointer, all suffered in an Arizona state championship game."Those weren't basketball injuries. That was more like a car wreck,'' said Indiana Elite coach Grant Gibson with a shake of his head."He's just now getting back into it. When he's at full go, he can be a completely different player. Right now we're really counting on Spencer (Turner) for all of our outside shooting, but when Matt starts hitting shots, that will make us a lot better team.''

2011 guard Matt Carlino commits following IU Elite Camp
By Alex | August 24, 2008
carlino2.jpgUpdate: We were just tipped off about this video of Carlino via goazcats.com. The file size is large, but if you have the patience and the bandwidth to check it out, it’s definitely worth a look. We’ll have a Q & A with IU’s latest commitment later this week.
Indiana has its first commitment for the class of 2011 — Gilbert (AZ) guard Matt Carlino. According to our good friend Dave Telep of Scout.com, Carlino made the decision shortly after attending this weekend’s elite camp in Bloomington:
“I had gone to their team camp in July and ever since then I’ve been thinking about Indiana. When I came down here and got coached by a lot of great coaches that just sold me. Looking up at the banners, that was amazing. They’re looking for me that when I get there I’m supposed to be an impact player on their team. They’re going to really get it rolling here with him there. By the time I get there, I hope, they’ll have a chance to win a national championship. Once I saw Indiana … Coach Crean is unbelievable. He gets guys ready for even higher levels and that’s what sold me on Indiana.”
Carlino grew up a fan of the Indiana program and that influence led him to pick the Hoosiers over UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State and USC. He’s ranked the No. 8 player in the 2011 class

by Hoop Scoop and is expected to be among the top 50 players in his class when Rivals and Scout expand their rankings.

Status Verbal IU

Scouts Grade 94

September, 2008: This lefty has a strong basketball I.Q. along with an outstanding work ethic. He scores from all different spots on the floor. What makes Carlino so good is he can beat you with the deep 3-point shot, pull-up from 15-17' and drive to the basket and finish. Defensively he keeps his opponent in front of him while off the ball he
anticipates passing lanes and understands how to rotate when helping his teammates.
July, 2008: Carlino is a well-known commodity on the west coast because of his scoring prowess; however, his shot selection most of the time is questionable to say the least. He is a prolific shooter and his release is textbook, but at this stage of his career he has a lot to learn if he plans on playing the point at the next level. Although he still has 3 years left of high school basketball his frame is quite mature and he doesn't possess great quickness. He struggled separating himself from defenders off the bounce and as a result he became turnover prone. He will, on occasion, locate open teammates and he
has the savvy to deliver the nifty assist, but most of the time he is hunting for his own shot. If Carlino decides to tone down his shot selection and develop other aspects of his game (getting others involved) he should be able to play somewhere on the Division I level.
October, 2007: If there is a better freshme
n point guard in the country than Carlino, I'd be very surprised. Carlino plays at a pace well beyond his years. He has a solid frame with long arms and overall very good length for the "one" spot. Although his speed and quickness are not at that elite level, his skill and craftiness are that of a college player. His jump shot is pure and feathery and he can get it off quickly as well. This lefty favors his strong hand, however, he is skilled enough to take defenders off the bounce (has a solid crossover move) with his right hand. He does have that scorer's mentality, but he made a number of nifty passes (off of pick-n-roll sets) durin
g this event (2007 Northern Cal Super 100) -- some of which were of the spectacular variety. Overall, Carlino is one of the more complete guards I've witnessed at such an early age, and it will be interesting to see his progress in the com
ing years.
September, 2007: Matt is a solid combo guard. This lefty has good skills. I think he is better at the 2 because he is a good shooter. He is being groomed to be a point guard. He is strong for a freshman. In fact his body is so developed I am scare
d that he might not have a great deal of upside. He is still very good and will be a high major player. He is very fundamental and knows how to play. Matt is a top 10 prospect in the 2011 class.
